La médina
La médina ("ville" en arabe) correspond à la ville historique. Entourée de remparts en pisé construits par l'Almoravide Ali Ben Youssef en 1132. Cette muraille mesure 5 mètres de haut et deux mètres d'épaisseur et s’étend sur une longueur d'environ 12 km.
Une partie de l’enceinte est encore bien conservée, elle fut cependant élargie au moment des agrandissements successifs de la médina, notamment à l'époque almohade. Cette immense enceinte est percée par 19 portes parmi lesquelles il faut signaler les deux principales :
* Bab Doukkala est un imposant ouvrage composé de deux bastions en saillie de part et d'autre, d'une porte livrant passage à un corridor. D'origine almoravide, elle doit son nom au territoire homonyme, habité par des populations almohades. La gare routière se trouve à proximité.
* Bab Aghmat est une porte qui s'ouvre dans l’un des bastions qui la défendaient. Ce plan résulte d’un remaniement de la porte primitive d’époque almoravide.
