Le rempart
Essaouira a été dotée dès sa création de d'ouvrages de défense. La ville est protégée par une enceinte crénelée, percée de portes du côté de la terre et flanquée de bastions face à la mer. Les outrages du temps et le manque d'entretien expliquent les désordres qui affectent aujourd'hui le rempart et beaucoup de constructions de la ville ancienne. Une telle situation porte atteinte au patrimoine historique et architectural du pays. Le secteur le plus menacé correspond à la courtine nord, directement baignée par la mer, là où elle protège l'ancien quartier juif, le mellah. Ici, d'anciennes maisons, souvent remarquables par leurs portes d'entrée ornementées et leurs colonnes en pierre avec des chapiteaux sculptés, tombent en ruine. Celles qui s'appuient sur le rempart contribuent à sa stabilité et en s'écroulant elles l'affaiblissent. Or, les vagues de tempête menacent d'ouvrir des brèches dans la muraille. L'Unesco qui a lancé en 1996 un réseau de coopération entre des petites villes côtières du bassin méditerranéen, connues pour leur intérêt historique et environnemental, se préoccupe de cet état de choses. Elle a demandé à des experts d'évaluer la dangerosité de la situation et de proposer des mesures qui permettraient de remédier aux désordres qui affectent le rempart, sans pour autant toucher à l'originalité de l'architecture et au caractère maritime de l'ouvrage .
